About this project

This work will focus on pushing our science further by coupling the MPAS-A model to an ocean model. This work will allow our scientific community to study the interactions between the atmosphere and the ocean at varying spatial and temporal scales. This work will be done in coordination with other MPAS-A coupling projects to ensure we create a product that works for multiple areas of scientific interest.

Why this work is important

This work is an important part of our mission to extend scientific capabilities to answer the next generation's science questions. In this work, we will explore implementing flexible coupling frameworks that allow us to couple MPAS-A to Earth system models (such as MOM6), data models, and AI-emulated models, thereby extending our ability to meet the needs of our broader community.

How does this fit within the CSF

  1. This project fits under Better Practices
  2. Increases interoperability of scientific models and physics
  3. Increases code portability across different architectures
  4. Increase interoperability of code written in different languages
  5. Provides performance portability across different architectures
  6. Allows us to run ultra-high resolution simulations more efficiently
